ASTM Standard Test Methods for FRP Grating
The Tests Behind the Data Sheet
Every credible FRP grating certificate references a set of ASTM test methods. Each answers one question: how strong, how stiff, how dense, how much water it absorbs, how it burns, how hard the surface, how it resists chemicals and UV. This chapter lists the key standards, the specimen used, typical values for molded and pultruded ZeAllgrate, and why each matters to the specifier.
ASTM Test Methods Summary Table
| Standard | Property | Specimen / Method | Typical Value | Significance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM D638 | Tensile strength & modulus | Dogbone specimen, controlled crosshead speed | 150-400 MPa strength; 10-25 GPa modulus | Material tensile basis for roving-rich bars |
| ASTM D790 | Flexural strength & modulus | 3-point bend, span-to-depth ratio 16:1 | 200-450 MPa strength; 10-25 GPa modulus | The load/span design property - controls deflection |
| ASTM D695 | Compressive properties | Cylinder/block loaded axially | 150-300 MPa | End-bearing and crushing at supports |
| ASTM D792 | Density / specific gravity | Immersion weighing | 1.4-2.0 g/cm3 | Verifies glass content and panel weight (kg/m2) |
| ASTM D570 | Water absorption | 24-hour water soak | below 0.5% vinyl ester; below 1.0% polyester | Long-term wet durability and moisture uptake |
| ASTM E84 | Surface burning | Steiner tunnel | FSI / SDI; Class A (0-25), B (26-75), C (76-200) | Fire code compliance for escape routes |
| ASTM D495 | Dry arc resistance | High-voltage arc across surface | over 100 s is good | Electrical non-tracking applications |
| ASTM D2584 | Ignition loss / glass content | Burn-off in furnace | ~33% molded; ~70% pultruded | Confirms reinforcement by weight |
| ASTM D2583 / D2240 | Barcol / indentation hardness | Barcol impresser / durometer | Barcol over 40 typical | Surface cure consistency and quality control |
| ASTM C581 | Chemical resistance | Immersion for 6 months, Barcol/flexural retention | Strength retention after exposure | Resin selection for corrosive service |
| ASTM D696 | Coefficient of thermal expansion | Dilatometer | 5-35 x 10^-6 /C by direction | Thermal gap and movement design |
| ASTM G154 | UV exposure | Fluorescent UV + condensation | 1000-3000 h accelerated | Outdoor weathering and resin stabiliser check |
What Each Test Actually Does
| Standard | Procedure in Brief |
|---|---|
| ASTM D638 | A dogbone-shaped coupon is pulled in tension at a standard crosshead speed until it breaks; stress and strain give tensile strength and modulus. |
| ASTM D790 | A rectangular bar is supported at two points and loaded at midspan (3-point bend); outer-fibre stress and chord modulus give flexural strength and stiffness. |
| ASTM D695 | A short cylinder or block is compressed axially to failure; the load-to-area gives compressive strength, relevant where bearing bars seat on supports. |
| ASTM D792 | The specimen is weighed in air and immersed; Archimedes' principle gives density and specific gravity, which cross-check glass content. |
| ASTM D570 | A clean specimen is soaked 24 hours in water, blotted and re-weighed; the weight gain is the water absorption percentage. |
| ASTM E84 | A 7.6 m specimen burns in the Steiner tunnel; flame spread index (FSI) and smoke developed index (SDI) are referenced to red oak = 100. |
| ASTM D495 | A high-voltage, low-current arc tracks across the surface until failure; the seconds to failure is dry arc resistance. |
| ASTM D2584 | A known mass is burned in a muffle furnace; the remaining inorganic residue is glass content, the loss is resin. |
| ASTM D2583 | A Barcol impresser indents the cured surface; the dial reading is a quick quality-control check of resin cure. |
| ASTM C581 | Coupons are immersed in the candidate chemical for six months; Barcol hardness, weight and flexural strength are compared with unexposed controls. |
| ASTM D696 | A bar is heated at a controlled rate in a dilatometer; dimensional change vs. temperature gives the coefficient of thermal expansion. |
| ASTM G154 | Fluorescent UV lamps plus water condensation cycle age the specimen; gloss, colour and flexural retention are monitored over hours of exposure. |
How to Read a Certificate of Analysis (COA)
Product Identity
The COA must name the exact resin grade, panel type, mesh and batch number you ordered - not a generic 'FRP grating'. Match it to the purchase order.
Test Method and Value
Each property lists the ASTM standard, the test value and often the specification limit. 'Flexural strength 320 MPa per ASTM D790' is credible; 'high strength' is not.
Lab and Signatory
Independent laboratory name and a signatory add traceability. Ask for the raw test report, not just a summary, for critical projects.
Glass Content
Cross-check density (D792) against ignition loss (D2584): ~33% glass for molded, ~70% for pultruded. A number that does not fit the product class is a red flag.
Fire Report
For FR grades, the E84 report must state FSI and SDI and the product identity; a marketing claim of 'Class A' without a report is unverified.
Batch vs. Type
A COA covers a produced batch. For design values, ask for certified material properties and load/span charts that apply to the grade, not a single batch.
