Where FRP Grating is Specified: 12 Industries & Why

Engineers do not specify FRP grating for decoration. They specify it where steel, wood or concrete provably fail. These are the industries where FRP has become the default material.

Corrosion-Driven Industries

Wastewater treatment — H₂S from anaerobic digestion corrodes steel walkways within years; FRP is now the de-facto standard. Chemical processing — acid and alkali atmospheres demand resin systems steel cannot survive. Pulp & paper — chlorine dioxide and bleach chemistry destroy both steel and wood.

Weight & Safety-Driven Industries

Offshore oil & gas — every kilogram of topside weight has a cost; FRP is up to 75% lighter than steel and immune to saltwater. Power & energy — non-conductive platforms protect personnel in electrically live areas. Food & beverage — hygienic, washdown-resistant flooring with no rust to contaminate product.

Infrastructure & Specialized

Marine piers, municipal pump stations, microelectronics cleanrooms, telecommunications towers, cooling towers, architectural facades and recreational facilities all specify FRP for specific, documented reasons — corrosion, conductivity, weight or maintenance cost.

Corrosion-Driven Industries in Detail

Wastewater treatment. Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) generated by anaerobic digestion attacks carbon steel walkways and handrails within a few years. FRP is now the de-facto standard for tank covers, walkways, grating and handrail systems in grit chambers, aeration tanks and digester buildings. Vinyl ester is specified where chlorine dosing and hypochlorite are present; isophthalic polyester covers the balance of the plant.

Chemical processing. Acid and alkali atmospheres, splash and spillage, plus cleaning regimes that alternate caustic and acid, make resin selection the core decision. Walkways over reactors, mezzanines in storage areas and platforms around pumps all see continuous chemical exposure. The correct resin — matched to the chemical list at worst-case temperature — delivers 20+ years where painted steel needs replacement in 5–10.

Pulp & paper. Chlorine dioxide and bleach chemistry destroy steel and wood alike. FRP platforms, grating and covers around bleaching towers and chemical storage are specified specifically because the chemistry is un-survivable for traditional materials.

Weight, Safety and Electrical Industries

Offshore oil & gas. FRP is up to 75% lighter than equivalent steel grating, cutting topside weight, lifting costs and crew exposure. It is immune to saltwater corrosion and, with fire-retardant resin, meets the flame-spread requirements of offshore codes. Pultruded grating carries the long spans of access decks; molded grating handles process platforms and splash zones.

Power & energy. FRP is non-conductive, so platforms, ladders and handrail around live electrical equipment, switchgear and transformers can be specified without the earthing burden of steel. It is also non-sparking — a genuine advantage in classified hazardous areas.

Food & beverage. Washdown with hot caustic and chlorine-based sanitisers destroys painted steel and pits stainless if it is not the right grade. FDA-compliant resin systems, smooth surfaces and no rust contamination make FRP the preferred flooring and platform material in bottling, dairy and meat-processing plants.

The Specification Path

The reliable route from environment to product has five steps: (1) document the chemical list, concentrations and worst-case temperatures; (2) define loads and support spacing from the structural layout; (3) choose the product family — molded for impact and bi-directional strength, pultruded for long spans; (4) confirm fire, slip-resistance and UV requirements against your code; (5) verify the final grade against load tables and the chemical resistance chart before issuing the PO. Send us the first three and our engineers complete the rest within one business day.

Reading the Matrix

The matrix maps the default product and the critical specification for each industry — but every project overrides the default with its own chemical list, load and code. Use the matrix to start the RFQ, then confirm resin, surface, span and hardware against the project's actual conditions. The industry pages on this site carry the full specification guidance per sector.
