Utility-Scale Solar PV Plant Walkways

Pultruded FRP grating walkways between PV arrays

FRP grating walkway between solar PV arrays
Project Overview

Utility-Scale Solar PV Plant Walkways

A utility-scale solar PV plant on a coastal plain needed maintenance walkways between rows of trackers. The ground between arrays is gravel over buried DC cabling, and operators service inverters, junction boxes and modules several times a season. Steel grating was ruled out: it is conductive near energised cabling, corrodes in the coastal atmosphere and adds dead load to the tracker foundations. The developer needed a walkway system that was electrically non-conductive, corrosion-proof, slip-resistant and quick to install across a multi-hectare site.
The Challenge

What We Solved

!

Maintenance crews need safe access between PV rows over gravel and cable trenches

!

Steel walkways risk galvanic corrosion and electrical-safety issues near DC cabling

!

Gravel and sand tracked onto walkways creates slip and trip hazards

!

Fast, modular installation was required across a multi-hectare site

Our Solution

How ZeAllgrate Delivered

ZeAllgrate supplied 8,500 m of pultruded FRP grating walkways and 4,200 m of FRP handrail. Walkway modules were sized to the standard PV row spacing and landed directly on the existing tracker foundations without new concrete, so the deck followed the array layout with no re-engineering.

✓

Zero maintenance and non-conductive — safe alongside DC cabling

✓

Grit-top anti-slip surface in dry and dusty conditions

✓

Lightweight modules cut installation time versus steel

✓

UV-stabilised resin matched to full outdoor exposure

Project Background

A utility-scale solar PV plant on a coastal plain needed maintenance walkways between rows of trackers. The ground between arrays is gravel over buried DC cabling, and operators service inverters, junction boxes and modules several times a season. Steel grating was ruled out: it is conductive near energised cabling, corrodes in the coastal atmosphere and adds dead load to the tracker foundations. The developer needed a walkway system that was electrically non-conductive, corrosion-proof, slip-resistant and quick to install across a multi-hectare site.

Engineering Approach

The specification was driven by electrical safety and logistics. Non-conductive FRP keeps maintenance crews off live DC circuits; grit-top handles the fine dust and sand that make smooth surfaces slippery; and UV-stabilised isophthalic resin survives full sun exposure and coastal salt air. Walkway modules were sized to standard PV row spacing so the deck lands on existing tracker foundations without new concrete. Handrail was supplied as an integrated system, with SS316 hardware throughout, and panels were shipped in container-optimised bundles and installed with a small crew in fast modular sequence.

Measured Outcomes

  • 8,500 m of walkway installed across the site with zero new concrete foundations.
  • Non-conductive deck verified alongside energised DC cabling; no electrical incident.
  • Grit-top surface passed slip checks in dusty service; UV-stabilised resin shows no fading or chalking at 1-year inspection.
  • Modular installation completed ahead of the maintenance-season deadline.

What Made It Work

The project proved that a solar farm does not need to choose between maintenance access and electrical safety. Pultruded FRP grating with grit-top and UV-stabilised resin delivers a non-conductive, corrosion-proof, slip-resistant walkway that installs fast and needs no painting — which is why FRP has become the default for PV plant walkways in coastal and dusty climates.

Engineering Notes

Utility-scale solar walkways are planned as a package: the drawing set fixes walkway runs between PV rows and inverter zones before manufacture, resin is mapped to the site climate (UV exposure, salt air, dust), and delivery is batched to the tracker layout for fast modular install. Grit-top is specified on every walking surface, UV-stabilised resin on the open exposure, and SS316 hardware throughout — no steel, no painting, no maintenance cycle.

What to Specify

  • Drawing set: walkway runs and inverter access fixed at order.
  • Resin per zone from the site climate and chemical list.
  • Grit-top on all walking surfaces; UV-stabilised on exposure.
  • SS316 hardware; batched delivery with certificates.
