PART 1 — GENERAL

1.1 Related Sections

Division 01 provisions apply. Related: Section 05 51 00 (handrail), Section 05 52 13 (grating), Division 26 (dielectric isolation), fall-protection system sections.

1.2 Summary

Specifies fixed FRP ladders, cages and ladder wells for vertical access in corrosive, marine or electrical environments. Covers rails, rungs, stand-offs, cage/well, anchorages and fall-protection interface.

1.3 System Description

Provide fixed FRP ladder to comply with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.27 and ISO 14122-4: rung spacing 300 mm; side rail clear width ≥ 400 mm; ladder inclination vertical; cages/wells where required above 2.4 m (8 ft) climb; interface with a compliant fall-arrest system (ladder is not the fall protection). Use FRP where corrosion, weight or non-conductivity is required.

1.4 Submittals

Submit product data, rail/rung section sizes, anchor and stand-off details, load certification (rung load), COA and samples.

PART 2 — PRODUCTS (MATERIALS)

2.1 Rails & Rungs

Pultruded FRP side rails (channel or rectangular, typically 150 × 25 mm or 100 × 50 mm) and round FRP rungs (Ø 25–35 mm), with grit or knurled surface for footing. Resin: isophthalic general, vinyl ester corrosive, phenolic fire/low-smoke. Glass content ~70%.

2.2 Cages & Wells

FRP hoop-and-vertical-bar cage (minimum 685 mm clear inside width; hoops every 1.5 m) or ladder well per OSHA. FRP bands and hoops; stainless A4/316 fasteners.

2.3 Anchorage & Stand-offs

Stainless A4/316 stand-off brackets and anchor bolts at top, bottom and intermediate supports; FRP brackets where non-metallic isolation is required.

PART 3 — EXECUTION (INSTALLATION)

3.1 Examination

Verify wall/structure anchorage and ladder plumb line; confirm stand-off spacing (typically every 3 m and at cage transitions).

3.2 Installation

Set rails plumb and vertical; fix stand-offs at specified intervals; install rungs at 300 mm spacing; mount cage/well per design; connect to fall-arrest system anchor at top. Do not overtighten; allow thermal movement. Provide safe landing at top.

3.3 Field Modification

Cut rails/rungs with carbide tools; deburr and seal cut ends; re-fix stand-offs after cutting; do not shorten rungs or alter rung spacing.

PART 4 — QUALITY

Manufacture under ISO 9001:2015. Verify: rails plumb within 3 mm/m; rung spacing 300 mm (±10 mm); clear width ≥ 400 mm; rungs grit/knurled; stand-offs fully anchored; cage hoops at ≤ 1.5 m; rung load certification (typical 135 kg point / code requirement). Reject cracked rails, loose rungs, missing stand-offs and altered rung spacing. Inspect anchor torque after first thermal cycle.

Supplementary Design Considerations

Fixed ladders are dimensioned to the governing code — OSHA 1910.23 (rung spacing 10–14 in, rung load 250 lbf, cage or ladder safety system above the threshold height) or ISO 14122-4. Rung spacing is uniform, side rails provide the required clearance, and cages/hoops are supplied where the code requires them. All components are pultruded FRP with SS316 hardware — non-conductive and corrosion-proof in chemical, offshore and wastewater service. Elevations are dimensioned to site drawings with fall-arrest attachment points, landing integration and tread surface (grit-top in wet service) specified at order.
