These articles take the practice deeper than our introductory blog: fit-up tolerances, deflection-governed selection, anti-slip surface data, material trade-offs, fire ratings, chlorine-service resin choice, maintenance and the molded-vs-pultruded decision. Every post ends with its authoritative sources.
FRP Grating Installation Tolerances & Fit-Up Best Practices
The fit-up tolerances that prevent most FRP grating field failures — support level, bearing length, thermal gaps, clip spacing and edge distance.
- Support level ±5 mm; molded bearing ≥50 mm, pultruded ≥75 mm.
- Thermal gap 3–5 mm; ΔL = L·α·ΔT with FRP α ≈ 20–30×10⁻⁶/°C.
- Hole Ø = bolt +1.5–2 mm; edge distance ≥2.5× bolt diameter.
- Clips every support intersection, ≤1200 mm, min 4 per panel.
How to Select FRP Grating by Load & Deflection Criteria
Why deflection — not strength — governs FRP design, the load and deflection limits to use, and a step-by-step selection method.
- Pedestrian live load 50–65 psf (2.4–3.1 kN/m²); process walkways ~5 kN/m².
- Deflection L/120 general, L/150 occupied, L/200 sensitive.
- Safety factor 4:1 molded / 5:1 pultruded; creep stress ≤25–33% ultimate.
- Define load → set limit → check span → select panel → verify.
Anti-Slip Surfaces Compared: Grit-Top vs Concave vs Convex vs Smooth
Coefficient-of-friction comparison of the four FRP grating surfaces, grit types, test standards and the mistakes to avoid.
- Grit-top best in wet/oily; concave for general wet; convex sheds debris.
- Indicative COF table: grit-top wet 0.5–0.7 vs smooth wet 0.15–0.3.
- Aluminium oxide vs silicon carbide; fine/medium/coarse grit grades.
- Test methods ASTM F1677/F2913, ISO 13287; never use smooth in wet areas.
FRP vs Aluminum Grating: Corrosion, Weight, Cost & Applications
Where aluminum still wins (high temperature, extreme impact) and where FRP beats it on pitting, galvanic attack and non-conductivity.
- Aluminum pits in chloride and is anodic to steel (galvanic at joints).
- FRP ~1.8–2.0 g/cm³, non-conductive, immune to pitting and galvanic attack.
- Aluminum preferred only >120 °C, extreme impact, certain aerospace.
- Comparative density, strength, cost and maintenance table.
FRP Grating Fire Ratings Explained: ASTM E84 Class A/B/C
Steiner tunnel FSI/SDI thresholds, Class A/B/C ratings by resin, and when phenolic low-smoke construction is required.
- Class A FSI ≤25; Class B 26–75; Class C 76–200 (SDI ≤450).
- General polyester ≈ Class C; ZeAll FR polyester/FR vinyl ester Class A–B.
- Phenolic Class A: low smoke, low toxicity, self-charring, no drip.
- IMO FTP Code / NFPA 130 govern enclosed and marine spaces.
FRP Grating in Chlorine & Bleach Environments: Resin Selection
How chlorine, hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide oxidize FRP, and why vinyl ester — not isophthalic polyester — is the floor for bleach service.
- Cl₂, NaOCl (bleach), ClO₂ attack via oxidative chain scission and blistering.
- Isophthalic polyester fair/good only at low concentration; VE excellent.
- Novolac VE for hot/concentrated duty; degradation ~doubles per 10 °C.
- C-veil surface barrier prevents fiber bloom; SS316 hardware.
FRP Grating Maintenance & Care: A Practical Guide
Washdown pressure, clip re-torque, annual inspection, touch-up repair, spill response and a maintenance schedule.
- No paint/galvanize/corrosion inspection — but not no-maintenance.
- Washdown HP ≤100 bar; re-torque clips at 6 months then annually.
- Resin paste touch-up for chips; replace panels with structural cracks.
- Flush spills immediately; never weld above or over-torque clips.
Pultruded vs Molded FRP Grating: How to Choose
Glass content, strength orientation, stiffness, span and impact — the numbers that decide molded vs pultruded.
- Molded ~33% glass, bi-directional; pultruded ~70% glass, uni-directional.
- Pultruded ≈2× stiffness; spans to 1.8–3 m vs molded ~1.2–1.5 m.
- Molded wins on impact and orientation; pultruded on long-span stiffness.
- Mixed projects use both: molded in process areas, pultruded main walkway.
