Anti-Slip Grit-Top — Performance Data & Testing

"Anti-slip" is a marketing word until it is a number. For grit-top FRP grating the meaningful number is the coefficient of friction (COF), measured dry and wet, by a recognised test. This article sets out the typical COF ranges, the test methods behind them, and what the OSHA/ADA/HSE thresholds actually mean for a wet process deck. See also the deeper anti-slip coefficient data guide.

1. What the Tests Measure

TestMethodWhat it gives
ASTM D2047James machine, static COF on polished floorStatic COF (sealed floors)
ASTM F1677 / F2913Portable slip tester (e.g. English XL)Wet/dry COF in situ
ISO 13287Safety footwear slip resistanceWet ramp COF for footwear
ASTM D1677Wet COF on treated surfacesWet performance baseline

2. Typical COF Values by Surface (indicative)

SurfaceDry COF (≈)Wet COF (≈)Note
Grit-top (silica bonded)0.8–1.00.55–0.75Best wet traction
Concave / convex molded0.6–0.80.40–0.55Good; no bonded grit
Smooth / covered0.4–0.60.20–0.35Slips when wet
Wet oily steel plate0.3–0.40.10–0.20High slip risk

Indicative ranges per ASTM F1677/ISO 13287-family testing; actual values depend on footwear, contamination and grit wear. Treat as selection guidance, not a job certificate.

3. The Regulatory Thresholds

OSHA does not publish a single universal COF number but expects walking working surfaces to be "slip-resistant"; many specifiers adopt a wet COF of ≥0.5 as a practical criterion (consistent with ADA/ANSI A137.1 guidance for accessible surfaces). HSE (UK) and ISO 13287 likewise expect footwear-to- surface wet performance to be demonstrated. On a permanently wet deck — pool, car wash, food washdown — grit-top is the surface that keeps wet COF above that 0.5 line; smooth covered grating does not.

4. Grit Wear Over Time

Bonded silica grit wears down under heavy traffic. A new grit-top panel starts at the high end of the wet COF range; after years of caster and foot traffic it migrates toward the concave range. This is a maintenance indicator, not a failure: inspect grit retention during routine walkdowns, and re-issue panels where large grit-free patches appear on a primary walking route. See anti-slip surface selection for grit vs. concave.

5. Contamination Beats the Surface

No grit rating overcomes standing oil, biofilm or ice. A grit-top deck coated in grease has a wet oily COF, regardless of the panel. Design drainage, cleaning cadence and de-icing into the route — the surface is the last line, not the first. This is why food and washdown zones pair grit-top with daily washdown rather than specifying grit-top and walking away.

6. Ask for the Data, Not the Claim

When a vendor says "anti-slip", ask for the wet COF, the test method (ASTM F1677 / ISO 13287), and whether the result is on new or worn grit. ZeAllgrate supplies grit-top FRP grating with indicative dry/wet COF data and retains test reports; send the route (wet/oily/dry) and footwear type for a matched surface recommendation.

7. Reading a COF Number the Right Way

A coefficient of friction is a useful number, but only if you know what it does not mean. A wet COF of 0.6 says nothing about your specific shoe, your specific contamination, or a three-year-old worn surface. Treat it as a relative ranking between surfaces on the same tester, not an absolute safety promise. When a vendor presents a "dry" number as evidence for a wet ramp, ask for the wet number and the method. Also watch the tester: a James machine on a polished laboratory floor is not the same as an in-situ English XL reading on a grit-top panel with dew on it, and the two are not interchangeable on a compliance file. For design, the practical approach is to specify grit-top for any permanently wet or oily route, keep the deck clean so contamination does not defeat the rating, and inspect grit retention annually — a worn grit-top migrates toward the concave range and is re-surfaced or replaced before it becomes a trip hazard. Numbers support a decision; they do not replace good surface selection and housekeeping.

Bottom line: ask for the wet number and the method, specify grit-top on permanently wet routes, keep the deck clean, and inspect grit wear annually. A COF supports the decision; contamination and worn grit defeat it. Treat the figure as a ranking, not a guarantee.

Testing and Specification

Slip performance is verified by the project's test method — ASTM C1028 (static COF) or the governing slip standard for the location — and the result is surface-and-condition specific: wet, oily and contaminated surfaces test lower than dry. Specify grit-top where wet or oily walking is expected, confirm the test data for the exact panel and overlay, and note that wear over years returns the panel toward smooth — schedule re-grit or replacement in the maintenance plan rather than assuming permanent performance.
