FRP Grating Testing & Certification: What Engineers Should Verify
A certificate is only as good as the test behind it. Before an FRP grating shipment lands on your dock, these are the checks a specifier should run.
Load & Deflection Testing
Certified load/span charts should be traceable to actual test panels — not extrapolated from resin data. Verify: uniform load capacity, concentrated load capacity and deflection at your specified span. ZeAllgrate provides load test reports with every project order.
Standards to Look For
Common references: ASTM E84 for surface burning, ISO 14122 for fixed platform safety, AS 1657 for access platforms, and OSHA for grating openings. Confirm your project code, then confirm the product grade matches — a fire-retardant grade for a tunnel, a UV grade for a coastal deck.
Material Certificates
A complete certificate states: glass content, resin type, panel dimensions, thickness and batch number. Batch traceability matters — it links your panels to their raw-material and production records if an issue ever arises.
Ask us for sample certificates before ordering — we're transparent about exactly what ships with every batch.
The ASTM Test Suite Behind the Certificate
A credible certificate is anchored to a defined set of mechanical and fire tests. The ASTM methods below are the ones engineers should expect to see cited on an FRP grating certificate.
| Property | Test Method | What It Verifies | Typical Molded Values |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength | ASTM D638 | Ultimate tensile capacity of the laminate | 70–140 MPa (resin/glass dependent) |
| Flexural strength & modulus | ASTM D790 | Bending capacity and stiffness of bearing bars | 140–280 MPa strength, 8–15 GPa modulus |
| Compressive strength | ASTM D695 | Crushing resistance under point loads | 140–260 MPa |
| Water absorption | ASTM D570 | Moisture uptake over 24h / 7d | 0.2–0.6% by weight |
| Surface burning | ASTM E84 | Flame spread index & smoke developed | Class A: FSI ≤ 25, SDI ≤ 450 |
| Impact | ASTM D5628 / D3763 | Drop-weight impact resistance of panels | Design-dependent |
How Load Tables Are Produced and Verified
Load/span tables are not extrapolated from resin data — they come from full-size panel tests. ZeAllgrate tests production panels on support spans, measures deflection under uniform and concentrated load, and derives each tabulated value at the deflection limits your code expects — typically L/100, L/150 or L/200 of the clear span. When you compare quotes, ask which deflection limit the published capacity corresponds to: two vendors quoting "50 kN/m²" can be quoting different limits, and the real capacities differ accordingly.
Certificate Checklist for Receiving Inspection
- Identity — product name, panel type, nominal dimensions and thickness match your PO.
- Materials — glass content (%), resin type and manufacturer, colour pigment.
- Traceability — batch / lot number linking the certificate to production records.
- Test data — cited methods, tested values and the standard or acceptance criteria.
- Conformity — signature, date, and the quality-stamp of the issuing body.
ZeAllgrate issues a material certificate with every batch and provides load test reports with project orders. Ask for a sample certificate before ordering — it shows exactly what ships with each batch.
Third-Party Verification: Why It Matters
In-house certificates confirm what a factory measured; third-party verification confirms a factory can be trusted to keep measuring it. ISO 9001 certifies the quality management system behind the test data. SGS and Intertek provide independent inspection and testing — witness testing, container pre-shipment inspection, and verification of load test results. For marine service, ABS and DNV type approval documents that panels and fittings meet classification society requirements for offshore platforms and vessels. Specify on your PO which third-party verification you require, and the certificate arrives with the shipment.
Interpreting the Test Report
When a certificate arrives, check three things before accepting it: the specimen construction matches your panel (the same shape in two resins can carry different numbers), the test method and units are stated (ASTM D790 flexural, D2584 burn-off, E84 flame spread), and the values are the average with the supporting data — not a single optimistic point. Load tables are produced from the tested section properties with the design span and deflection limit applied; confirm the table carries the working load or ultimate load basis so you do not double-apply a safety factor. Keep the batch certificates on file — they are the traceability link if a panel is questioned years later.
