FRP Grating Case Study | Water Park Anti-Slip Decking — ZeAllgrate
Recreational & Water Park — Project Background
A large outdoor water park receiving up to 12,000 visitors per day during summer required replacement decking around its wave pool, lazy river, body slides and splash pad. The previous concrete and wooden decking was continuously wet from splash and spray, became dangerously slippery when wet, and — in the case of wood — rotted and splintered within a few years. The park operator also had a recurring complaint that dark concrete decking burned bare feet in midday summer sun, leading to first-aid visits and negative reviews. A further requirement: the decking had to drain water quickly so standing puddles did not become slip traps between cleaning cycles.
Engineering specified grit-top, UV-stabilized vinyl ester molded grating in a light heat-reflecting color, with open mesh for rapid drainage. Client identity is kept confidential; the project is described as Confidential Client, a regional water park operator.
Engineering Specification
Working values agreed with the client's engineering team during design review.
| Parameter | Selected Value | Standard / Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Live load | 5.0 kN/m² (high crowd) | Local code / EN 1991-1-1 crowded areas |
| Clear span | 0.9 m between support joists | ZeAllgrate molded grating design guide |
| Deflection limit | L/200 (crowd comfort) | ZeAllgrate / park engineering basis |
| Resin system | ZeAll VE (vinyl ester, UV-stabilized) | Pool chemicals / UV / chlorine resistance |
| Panel thickness | 38 mm molded, light gray | Heat-reflecting color |
| Surface | Grit-top bonded quartz aggregate | Maximum wet slip resistance |
| Mesh | Standard 38×38 mm | ZeAllgrate standard molded grating |
| Fixings | SS316 clips | ASTM A276 316 |
| Wet slip performance | Wet COF > 0.7 | ASTM F1679 |
| Drainage | Open mesh, no standing water | Pool deck hygiene requirement |
What Was Supplied and How It Went In
ZeAllgrate supplied 680 m² of 38 mm ZeAll VE UV-stabilized molded grating in light gray, with bonded grit-top surface across all pool edges, slide landings and the splash pad. Custom curved panels were fabricated around the wave pool perimeter and lazy river bends. The open 38×38 mm mesh drains splash water straight through to the gravel bed below, so there are no standing puddles on the walking surface. The light gray vinyl ester surface stays noticeably cooler than dark concrete in midday sun.
Installation was completed over the park's winter closure window, with panels hand-laid over existing support joists because FRP is light enough for two workers to carry. Wet coefficient of friction was tested on sample batches at > 0.7 per ASTM F1679, comfortably above the park's acceptance threshold for wet pool decking.

Outcomes and Inspection Findings
In the first peak summer season, the park reported zero slip-and-fall claims related to the new decking, compared with recurring claims on the previous concrete and wooden surfaces. Bare-foot comfort complaints dropped sharply, and maintenance staff reported that the open mesh eliminated the daily puddle-sweeping routine.
- Safety: wet COF > 0.7 measured; zero decking-related slip claims in peak season.
- Comfort: light gray surface stays cool under midday sun; no bare-foot burn complaints.
- Drainage: open mesh eliminates standing puddles; no daily puddle sweeping needed.
- Chemicals: immune to chlorine and pool chemicals; no blistering or fading.
- Service life: expected 25+ years vs. 4–6 years for wooden decking in this service.
Engineering Notes
Water park decks are specified for wet-slip safety and UV life: grit-top on every wet traffic surface, UV-stabilised resin for the outdoor exposure, and colour-matched panels where the project wants a finished look. The corrosion-proof construction never needs repainting around pools and splash zones, and SS316 hardware carries the fixings in the chlorinated atmosphere. Loads are checked at the actual deck span with the concentrated case verified alongside the uniform case.
What to Specify
- Grit-top on all wet traffic surfaces.
- UV-stabilised resin; colour agreed on the drawing.
- SS316 hardware in the chlorinated atmosphere.
- Both load cases checked at the deck span.
- Grit-top on all wet traffic surfaces.
- UV-stabilised resin; colour agreed on the drawing.
- SS316 hardware in the chlorinated atmosphere.
- Both load cases checked at the deck span.
