Architectural Building Facade & Sun-Shading Grating

Custom-color UV-stabilized FRP grating as architectural facade and brise-soleil

Project Overview

Architectural & Facade — Project Background

A 12-story commercial office building in a subtropical coastal city needed a ventilated facade and external sun-shading system to reduce solar heat gain on its west-facing glazing. The architect specified a perforated, open-weave material that would let air circulate behind it (reducing the heat stack effect in the facade cavity) while blocking direct sun on the glass. Steel was rejected because of coastal salt-spray corrosion and the weight it would add to the facade substructure; aluminum was rejected because it conducts heat and requires regular repainting in coastal air. The architect also required a custom color matched to the building's brand palette, with a matte, non-glare finish.

Engineering specified UV-stabilized vinyl ester molded grating, custom-colored in the factory, mounted as vertical facade panels and horizontal brise-soleil blades. Client identity is kept confidential; the project is described as Confidential Client, a commercial building owner and architect.

Solution & Installation

What Was Supplied and How It Went In

ZeAllgrate supplied 1,100 m² of 38 mm UV-stabilized ZeAll VE molded grating, custom-colored to the architect's RAL reference in a matte finish. Panels were fabricated as 1200 × 2400 mm vertical facade modules and as horizontal brise-soleil blades on the west elevation. The open mesh allows air to circulate through the facade cavity, reducing the heat stack effect that would otherwise drive hot air past the glazing. Because FRP is roughly 75% lighter than steel, the facade substructure could be designed with smaller aluminum extrusions, reducing both material cost and installation time.

All panels were pre-drilled in the factory for the SS316 stand-off brackets, so the facade contractor could clip panels to the substructure from a suspended scaffold without on-site cutting. The matte color-matched finish reads as a deliberate architectural element rather than an industrial grating, and has shown no salt-spray corrosion in the coastal atmosphere.

Results & Performance

Outcomes and Inspection Findings

At 3-year inspection, the building owner reported no color fading, no chalking, and no corrosion of the brackets. The west-facing offices report a measurable reduction in summer solar heat gain, and the facade has required zero repainting or maintenance.

  • Thermal performance: brise-soleil reduces west-glazing solar heat gain; building management reports lower peak cooling load on the west elevation.
  • Corrosion: zero salt-spray corrosion on FRP panels and SS316 brackets after 3 years in coastal air.
  • Color stability: no fading or chalking on the UV-stabilized custom-color surface.
  • Weight: ~75% lighter than steel; smaller substructure, faster installation.
  • Maintenance: zero repainting; expected 25-year facade service life.

Engineering Notes

Architectural FRP is specified on code and finish as well as structure: the E84 class is confirmed for the rated location, UV-stabilised resin is specified for the outdoor exposure, and colour and edge finish are agreed at design stage because they are locked at manufacture. Screens and louvres use pultruded profiles for dimensional stability; walkways and decks use molded or pultruded grating with the surface matched to the walking duty. Loads are checked at the actual support grid, not a catalogue span — screens and facades rarely match the datasheet conditions.

What to Specify

  • UV-stabilised resin for exposed elements; colour agreed on the drawing.
  • E84 fire class confirmed for rated locations.
  • Pultruded profiles for screens/louvres; grating for decks with surface per duty.
  • Fabrication drawings approved before manufacture; field adjustments are expensive after lamination.
